as the most versatile instrument, and a key figure in the continuing evolution of the genre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"intro\">Throughout the history of jazz, the piano has been employed both as a rhythm section member, and as the focal instrument, either in an ensemble or solo setting.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, there have been countless albums released in the last 100 years that have explored the piano as a lead instrument, giving aspiring pianists a wealth of material to take inspiration from.<\/p>\n<p>Here I will outline the qualities of what I think are the most inspiring and impressive jazz piano albums of all time. <\/p>\n<p>This list is my opinion alone, and in a selection of thousands of albums, you may find many different albums that matter more to you!<\/p>\n<div allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2>Art Tatum \u2013 Piano Starts Here (1933\/1949)<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Art_Tatum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Art Tatum<\/a> is considered by many to be the greatest technical jazz pianist ever. <\/p>\n<p>His astonishing speed, dexterity, and virtuosic improvisation defied the limits of the instrument. <\/p>\n<p>Piano Starts Here contains some of Tatum&#8217;s finest recordings and an essential listen for anyone interested in the evolution of jazz piano. <\/p>\n<p>His renditions of standards like <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/CaPeks0H3_s?si=X--HQgIgdXP0VWEi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cTiger Rag\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/col9EMcuH-w?si=e53o8wzYjx-QgZPY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cSweet Lorraine\u201d<\/a> reveal his unparalleled ability to simultaneously play intricate lines and dense harmonies while maintaining a sense of swing and soul. <\/p>\n<p>While the styles used in this album may be outdated (along with other albums in this list), Tatum dominated his era of jazz piano, and will always be an impressive force to for his powerful technique and impeccable timing, brings the tunes to life with a vibrancy that makes each track a joy to listen to. <\/p>\n<p>His ability to weave the blues into incredibly intricate My Mind.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>This album also features one of the most unwavering rhythm sections in history, with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen on Double Bass and Drums. <\/p>\n<p>The three musicians work changed the course of jazz. <\/p>\n<p>On Monk\u2019s Dream, his first album for Columbia Records, Monk\u2019s dissonant chords, angular melodies, and unique rhythmic phrasing are on full display. <\/p>\n<p>The album features compositions like <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yHKl0euhZI0?si=TU2b3DLroUADe2t5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cBlue Monk\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/N6buuH8Q4T0?si=Bnk3a8AEDG1STHJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cStraight, No Chaser,<\/a>\u201d which have since become standards. <\/p>\n<p>Monk\u2019s eccentric yet deeply melodic style made him one of the most influential pianists in jazz history, and Monk\u2019s Dream captures the essence of his ground-breaking contributions. <\/p>\n<p>Whether you like blend of his distinctive style, which incorporates both powerful block chords and intricate, modal improvisations. <\/p>\n<p>Tracks like <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0zdoOyeRTCA?si=OeHFF1V3ZL-63iN8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cPassion Dance\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1CO-eIhgxuU?si=votQj4TUiOMIdJFc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cFour by Five\u201d<\/a> showcase his ability to create complex, flowing lines while maintaining a strong rhythmic and harmonic foundation. <\/p>\n<p>Tyner\u2019s approach was ground-breaking, and this album remains one of for his ability to weave together classical, jazz, and improvisational music, Jarrett\u2019s performance at the K\u00f6ln Opera House captures his unique genius. <\/p>\n<p>The concert was entirely improvised, and Jarrett\u2019s mesmerising performance, filled with both spontaneous melodies and intricate harmonic structures, became a landmark in the world of jazz piano. <\/p>\n<p>His ability to communicate with such emotional depth through solo improvisation makes this album a timeless masterpiece.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\"><iframe title=\"&#091;Brad Mehldau&#093; The Art Of The Mehldau<\/a> has been described as the greatest jazz pianist of the 21st century. <\/p>\n<p>His work encompasses a huge variety of genres including pop, folk, classical, and his textural and melodic qualities are unmatched. <\/p>\n<p>However, before he softened his touch, Mehldau was a ferocious post-bop improvisor, who would blow the lid off a tune over the course of 5 minutes improvising. <\/p>\n<p>Art of the Trio Volume 4 for me is the apex of his powers in this period. <\/p>\n<p>The powerhouse rhythm section of Jorge Rossy and Larry Grenadier provide all the energy and drive needed to fuel immense harmonic and melodic improvisation from Mehldau. <\/p>\n<p>This album features staple standards such as <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/nc6iApaemEA?si=K3Uiu9LUUhEdoXEA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cAll the Things You Are\u201d<\/a>, but also the Radiohead song <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yC95E1kNnq4?si=bcR_c65pEVcszgH2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cExit Music for a Film\u201d<\/a>, and so it has everything you need to hear from the master pianist.<\/p>\n<p><a
